In many ways, this is peak Bond: Ken Adam’s iconic sets, Blofeld with the white cat, and the score. And I appreciate that the hollowed out volcano inspired the hosts of one of my favorite podcasts, Bionic.
But the pacing feels slow compared, particularly whenever spaceship models are on-screen or during extended sequences of “LOOK, IT’S JAPAN, HOW EXOTIC!!”
And as cool as Tanaka and the Japanese Secret Service are, the whole “In Japan, women are second to men!” and “You, Sean Connery, must become one of us by darkening your skin and hair” induce cringe 🙈
Finally, I’d like to draw y’all’s attention to this terrible matte shot because… wow.
